I don't know when kids normally learn that a word is broken into syllables, but Case has taught himself. About two weeks ago we were driving in the car and I noticed he was saying words and counting buttons on his DVD player as he said them and then he would say, "That's a 2 word. That's a 4 word." After observing him I saw he was doing syllables. So, we've taught him about the word syllable and now he can count on his fingers how many syllables a word has. I'm just sayin' he's a smart kid!
