What Is The World Coming To?

Each year, the students at my school do a fundraiser by selling magazines for two weeks. Each year, the 8th graders don't meet their goal b/c they're too cool to sell magazines and they've already done it for two years. Each year, students who sell so many magazines get to see a BMX bike show at the end of the school day.

This year, our principal decided that if the whole school met a goal of $70,000 in magazine sales then everyone could participate in the BMX show. Well, we fell short by $8,000. We discussed it at meetings and decided that we should stand by our goal of everyone goes or no one goes. We all agreed that if we didn't make our goal, then no one should go. Cancel the BMX show. Otherwise, what would we be teaching our students.

Well, its now been two weeks since sales have ended, kids have been told that there is no show, and everyone has moved on. Except for our principal. She called an emergency meeting today after school and told us that she should have never agreed to this goal, that she set the goal way too high, and that she's going to have the show and all students would go.

What???!!!!

As an 8th grade teacher, I had maybe 8 students out of 30 sell magazines, but now she is wanting to reward them all even though they didn't meet their goal.

Seriously, what are we teaching out children - it's okay, even if you don't meet your goal you'll still be rewarded. Don't even bother trying.
